design + technology + cooking

As I mentioned earlier, it is always really satisfying when good design and technology get together.  But good design + technology + cooking?  Aside from beautifully designed appliances, we don’t often see a lot of this.

Check this out on The Kitchn:
“This virtual countertop, developed by a grad student at the University of Washington and Intel researchers, can identify ingredients, suggest recipes, and guide you through steps.

The system is called Oasis and it works by using two different cameras positioned above the work station. One senses depth and color while the other projects images onto the surface. The video shows a steak and then a pepper being placed within the camera’s range, and then a menu with recipe suggestions using those two ingredients popping up to one side.”

Can you imagine?  You place a pile of food on the counter, and it brings up a list of recipe options of what to make with them.  This may seem a little excessive, as you know what your ingredients are, and you can easily look up recipes.  But I think this could be lazy cooking at its finest!  There is also nothing worse then running back and forth to your computer to look up details of a recipe.  This projects everything right onto your counter, along with a food timer and a virtual shopping list.  I could definitely be on board with this someday!

I am always wishing for some sort of App that would keep track of what you have in your fridge/pantry.  So, when you are trying to think of something to dinner, you can quickly be reminded of what you have to work with.  Taken one step further, it could then suggest recipes based on what you have.  Can someone make me one of those?  Thanks :)

Ummm… this is my dream come true. I'm mildly helpless in the kitchen. Not lazy so much as overwhelmed.
